Your customers without a smartphone and digital loyalty: what to do?

It's the number-one objection, and it's a fair one: "I have older customers, customers with no smartphone — I'm not going to shut them out of my loyalty program." You're right to raise it, and the honest answer comes in two parts: it's rarer than you think, and for the real cases, there's a simple solution that leaves no one out.

First, let's size the problem

Today, the overwhelming majority of adults own a smartphone, seniors included, where adoption has soared over the past decade. In a local business's customer base, the customers genuinely without a smartphone can usually be counted on one hand. Those aren't numbers to ignore — they're people you care about — but they're no reason to stay on paper for everyone.

The solution: manual counting, on the merchant side

At Fidelyz, the answer is built into the dashboard: for a customer without a smartphone, you add their visits in two taps from their customer record. You create their record once (a first name is enough), and at each visit you bump their counter yourself: they collect the same stamps, reach the same reward, and enjoy the same gesture as everyone else.

In practice, at the counter:

  1. Mrs. Bennett comes in for her bread, like every morning.
  2. You open her record (two letters in the search box is enough).
  3. One tap: visit counted. She's at 8/10, like any other customer.
  4. At 10, you hand her the reward, in person and with a smile.

No one is left out, and you keep ONE single system: no more double bookkeeping, paper plus digital.

I'll go digital without leaving anyone out

What this solution changes (and doesn't)

What it guarantees: the reward and the recognition, for everyone. What it doesn't replace: notifications. A customer without a smartphone obviously won't get your offers on a lock screen: for them, the link stays what it always was — the conversation at the counter. And that's just fine: digital loyalty was never meant to replace the relationship, only to extend it for the 95% of customers you don't see every day.

The trap to avoid: sizing for the exception

The real risk isn't shutting out three customers without a smartphone (you've just seen that you won't). It's depriving the hundreds of others of a card that doesn't get lost, of win-backs that bring them in, and of a customer list you own — all out of caution for an exception that already has its solution. The full mechanics are in our digital loyalty card guide, and the textbook example is in bakeries, where the objection comes up most.
